Remembering the Master, Peter Lindbergh

I loved Peter Lindbergh’s images before I even knew his name.

On September 3, 2019, I opened up my Instagram account to discover the saddest news on my feed: Peter Lindbergh had passed away. Peter’s images have captured my imagination all my life. I vividly remember his Vogue covers from the 1990s with such awe. The way he portrayed women gave them a sense of realness that was approachable and poetic, and absolutely new. At that time I had no idea who the photographer was, nor cared much, but what he was doing stuck with me.

Through all the years that I’ve spent in photography Peter Lindbergh's work has never felt dated or passé. The simplicity of his approach has become timeless and iconic. As I look at my own evolution as an image-maker I feel inspired by the work of the master Peter Lindbergh. His ability to focus on the subject without overdoing it or getting caught up in the look of the day is my true north. I have been lucky enough to have worked with all sorts of clients and no matter the nature of the work: portrait, wedding, family, commercial, etc the one guide for me is always to look for what is authentic and poetic.

Clever light and retouching tricks may give you the upper hand for the time being but lasting work is about the people we photograph. Taking the time to get to know them and be part of the moment of their life is what makes unforgettable images. We all have to be technically competent, that goes without saying, but true connection is something that requires care and love.

I will keep Peter Lindbergh even closer to my heart as I continue working with all my beautifully authentic and passionate clients. Thank you for trusting my vision.
