“These are challenging times for everyone, and it’s important we shed light on the positives.”

What are your fears and/or concerns right now?

The COVID-19 pandemic affects everyone, everywhere. But it affects different groups of people differently, deepening existing inequalities. This is especially true for Black girls because the whole system is already against them. Unfortunately, these conditions will maintain and exacerbate the issues Black girls face.

What have you learned from living this new normal?

As a family, we’ve learned a whole new way of living in terms of being mindful of time with each other. We’re not taking in-person social interactions or quality family time for granted. These are challenging times for everyone, and it’s important we shed light on the positives. We’ve learned something new and found creative ways to celebrate. I’ve also figured out how to pivot my organization, Girls For A Change, to still provide a program that will be of service and support to Black girls as we strive to build their bright and shiny futures.

How has the pandemic raised awareness of racial and social inequality?

The pandemic is especially disrupting the lives of women and "bringing to the forefront the gender inequalities that impact women's lives every day." (Western New York Women’s Foundation) Exposing racism… yet again. It’s had a huge impact on Black women by negatively affecting their finances, mental health, access to healthy food and household essentials, while they’re still trying to save everyone else.

Do you think anything positive will come from all of this?

The COVID-19 crisis doesn’t only have dark sides. It also provides opportunities to improve our lives and organizations. People can reimagine how to do anything in the world.
